How much volume is a quart, exactly? A quart is 4 cups, 2 pints, or 32 ounces. Personalhas 16 quarts or less, smallhas 17 to 35 quarts, the mediumhas 36 to 59 quarts, largehas 60 to 99 quarts, and gianthas 100 quarts and above of storage volume. To try to simplify things, we have broken down all of the coolers we have reviewed into 5 categories: personal, small, medium, large, and huge. ![]() Considering this, even if a particular cooler might advertise as being larger, you might not be able to keep as many perishable items cold as you would have anticipated. There is a huge variety of cooler shapes and thicknesses, so just because a cooler appears to be larger in all actuality it might have LESS storage space than a thinner, more optimally shaped rival.Īlso, parts of the storage area might not be insulated (this is very common on soft-sided coolers that oftentimes have additional external pockets or compartmentalized storage areas). ![]() While having a product that meets your storage needs might seem like a no-brainer, there is more to the story. And the size comes at a cost: the larger the cooler, the more burdensome it will be to transport.īecause of this, it would be silly for someone who just needs enough room to pack their lunch to purchase a huge cooler that can store 150 cans. The size requirements someone needs for a personal backpacking cooler will be vastly different than those who are looking for a product that can store a week’s worth of food and drinks for a large family. One of the most important criteria that people look for when shopping for a cooler is its storage size. In a hurry and just want to look up a specific cooler’s dimensions and/or storage capacity? ![]() The iLok License Manager is an application that you download from, and when you're logged in you have full access to all your locations (your computers or USB dongles) and your licenses. There are two ways of managing your iLok licenses - one way is to use the app available for Windows and macOS, and the other is online. This means that you can download the demo from the developer's webpage, install the plugin and then set up your demo license - up to 30 days - directly in your DAW. Several effect and virtual instrument developers offer trial periods, which are also supported by the iLok licensing system. If the software requires an iLok USB Dongle you'll be asked if you want to transfer your license to the dongle, and if the software only requires an iLok account authentication you just choose which location (computer) you want to license. This usually happens when you boot up your DAW for the first time after installing the software, and once the plugin is scanned you'll see an iLok window where you're asked to authenticate yourself. When you have installed software that is protected by iLok, you are asked to authenticate it when it's first scanned by your DAW. Zero Downtime is sometimes referred to as iLok ZDT. This is an automated process, which means that you don't have to wait for the support to get back to you or for some process to finish just initiate the Zero Downtime service and you're good to go. Zero DowntimeĪnother nice feature that iLok provides is their Zero Downtime service, which means that if you lose your iLok USB dongle you can temporarily access all your licenses until you get your USB dongle back, or simply get a new one to transfer the licenses to. This means that the Location of the license is set to your computer of choice, and if you want to you can transfer the license to a portable location, in this case, your iLok USB dongle. Dongle Not Always RequiredĮven though the dongle is required by some software, the most common solution now is to simply use the iLok technology for license management on the computer itself. You still need to install the instruments or effects, but either way, the license management is as simple as it gets. Want to demo a song for a fellow musician on their computer? Sure thing - just load up the USB dongle and you have all your licenses ready to go. By doing so you are allowed to use Altiverb on any computer that has the USB dongle plugged in, which is great for both portability and studios with multiple computers. ![]() This means that you aren't licensing expensive software like AudioEase Altiverb to a single computer, but rather to a single USB dongle. iLok USB Third Generation (current generation). So far they have released three generations of their USB dongle What makes iLok stand out from the crowd regarding license management is its hardware accessory, the USB dongle, which enables you to transfer your licenses seamlessly between different computers. The benefit for the users and consumers is the ease of use when you have multiple products that are licensed in the same way you have all your licenses in the same place. ILok is a software licensing platform that enables software developers - like those who create some of our favorite virtual instruments and effects - to secure their applications. ![]() ![]() Actually, I think one of the problems with video game music is - at least with film music - yes, you have your restrictions, but of course, video game composers have their restrictions, too. ![]() "I mean, Beethoven changed the world as we know it, and I doubt he would have done that through video games. "I have a hard time imagining that," Bell adds. Laughing, concert violinist and self-described "video game addict" Joshua Bell says, "Uh, well, that's quite a statement to say that about Beethoven. "It's for this reason that I've always said that if Beethoven were alive today, he'd be a video game composer." Tallarico explains that video game music isn't a passive experience, but an integral part of the foreground. Wall went on to score the third and fourth installments of the Myst series, and he based the main theme for Myst III on Karl Orff's Carmina Burana. The complexity of the music improved to the point where the score of a video game became almost indistinguishable from the music played in the finest concert halls. He says the game actually aided the player through the mysterious worlds, functioning as clues. It was 1993's Myst that made Wall realize the power of music in a game. That changed with the CD-ROM.Īs personal computers became more agile and more powerful, suddenly the music track could handle something resembling real music. But still, video game music was limited by its hardware. Video game soundtracks began to take influence from more serious places, like the Russian folk song in Tetris. Like the purpose of all great music, it's supposed to change your heart rate - to move you and make you feel. And it goes to show and prove how significant audio and music are." Now they'd do the same studies without the sound, and the people wouldn't panic as much. Now, what the game programmers did was that they took the person's heart rate, and as they're getting closer and closer, people would start to panic. Video game composer Tommy Tallarico explains, "If you remember in Space Invaders, you know, as the ships started to come down, the aliens, and as they got closer and closer, the sound got faster and faster. However trivial these early video games' soundtracks may seem, they weren't serious for good reason. It's catchy and it's fun, but it's not exactly serious music. The bleeps and bloops, they kind of invade your brain." "Playing all those arcade games, I never even paid attention to the music," Wall tells host Andrea Seabrook. One of today's top video game music composers, John Wall, spent much of the 1980s pumping quarters into Pac Man machines. The players hit a ball back and forth across a center line with that now-recognizable onomatopoeic sound. In the early 1970s, video game music wasn't exactly symphonic. What was the music? Uematsu's soundtrack for the popular video game Final Fantasy. In fact, there was almost a riot at the box office when people couldn't get tickets. In May 2004, a composer named Nobuo Uematsu joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic for a single performance of his most famous work. Video game music has come a long way since Space Invaders, but that doesn't make its soundtrack any less effective. ![]() Among the world's oldest amusement parks, Pullen is known for terrific recreational opportunities, especially for kids and families. The Detailed Review of Affinity PhotoĪffinity Photo is a large and complex program with a wide range of features, and we don’t have room to look at them all in this review. I’m always on the lookout for an up-and-coming program that can help improve my workflow, so I treat all my image editor reviews as though I might consider using the program myself.ĭisclaimer: Serif has given me no compensation or consideration for the writing of this review, and they have had no editorial input or control over the final results. My experience ranges from small open-source editors to industry-standard software suites, and that has given me a unique perspective on what a good editor can accomplish – as well as how frustrating a poorly-designed one can be.ĭuring my training as a graphic designer, we spent a fair amount of time both using these software packages and understanding the logic that went into the design of their user interfaces, and that also helps me to separate out the good programs from the bad. Hi, my name is Thomas Boldt, and I’ve worked with many different image editors in my career as a graphic designer and a professional photographer. What I Don’t Like: Lacking photo library management. Best of all, Affinity is available as a one-time purchase, no subscription required. ![]() The upgrade from version 1.0 to version 2.0 fixed most of the issues that I experienced in my earlier testing and added a bunch of great new tools. Affinity Photo is a powerful and affordable image editor that is directly competing with Photoshop for enthusiasts and professional users. ![]() For those of you who’ve been waiting for years, thank you for hanging in there with us.’ ‘The delay is just 12 short weeks and development is on the final straight now we’re going to take the time we need to make sure we can launch a game we’re proud to launch. ‘The irony of delaying Dead Island 2 is not lost on us, and we are as disappointed as you undoubtedly are,’ Dambuster and Deep Silver said in a joint statement on Twitter. The three-month delay will no doubt be disappointing to those eager, but there’s hope the extra time will help round out any rough edges for a more refined experience in the end. While originally set to launch in February 2023, it will now launch on 28 April 2023. In a statement, developer Dambuster Studios and publisher Deep Silver acknowledged the irony of pushing the game back, given it was stuck in development hell for nearly a decade, and reassured fans the extra time would give the game more polish and panache. ![]() Though it’s not dropping on Game Pass, that shouldn’t stop you from breaking some zombie bones.Dead Island 2, the long-awaited sequel to 2011 hit Dead Island, has officially been delayed. It’s grizzly and gruesome, and a welcomed addition to the zombie-smashing series.ĭead Island 2 is slated for an April 21, 2023, release date and will be available on PC ( as a timed EGS exclusive), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X & S. The FLESH system offers procedurally generated damage, where attacks can dismember, break, and flay zombies until there’s literally nothing but bone and sinew left. Dambuster Studios created “gore tech,” which turns anatomically correct zombies into squishy meat puppets. Though Dead Island 2 shares similarities with Dead Island, one of its shining features is brand new. Utilizing customizable melee weapons and a newfound ability to tap into your zombified feral side, you’ll navigate the once-pristine streets of California in search of survivors in need of help and your escape from the undead hell. The game follows in the original’s footsteps, blending elements of an open-world first-person shooter with an action RPG. With the state under full quarantine, the remaining residents are on their own-especially you, a freshly bitten survivor who finds they may be immune to the infection. Unfortunately, the virus that ravaged the resort has evolved and made it to the mainland, ravaging sunny California. Ten years after the events of Dead Island, the Banoi Island incident is a distant memory. It’s not much, especially for a game as large as Dead Island 2 proposes to be, but as many use Game Pass as a testing ground for new games, it certainly would be welcomed. In 2022, Dead Island was very briefly available for a weekend in September. That’s not to say it never will shuffle its way onto the platform. While the undead action RPG will have a home on Xbox One and Xbox Series X & S (along with PS4, PS5, and PC), Dead Island 2 isn’t currently slated for a Game Pass release. With the April 21, 2023, release date approaching, we’re left with two questions: Will Dead Island 2 emerge from its grave far less rotten than its development process, and will it do so onto Xbox Game Pass? Then, just over a year later, publisher Deep Silver made the jarring announcement that Yager had been dropped and an unnamed team, later revealed to be Sumo Digital, had taken over.Įverything seemed to be shambling along smoothly until 2019 when THQ Nordic revealed the game made another shift to Deep Silver’s Dambuster Studios, where the current and previous generation zombie FPS made its greatest strides. After Yager Development dropped a very intriguing trailer featuring Pigeon John’s “The Bomb” and a progressively more infested Los Angeles, there was radio silence. ![]() For a while, it was a sure bet that Dead Island 2, the sequel to Techland’s zombie-bashing first-person open world action RPG, was going to be lost in development hell. “I think there’s quite a radical difference between having solar panels on your roof that actually make your house look better versus ones that do not, I think it’s going to be a night-and-day difference,” said Musk in a statement before the official launch of Tesla’s first solar roof. With the Solar Roof, the company aims to bring solar further into the mainstream by removing any sort of aesthetic concerns that homeowners may have. That sentiment was emphasized in Elon Musk’s October 2016 launch of Tesla’s first roofing product. Some solar industry stakeholders believe that solar needs to be rebranded as an aesthetic and technical improvement that can be a part of a home renovation rather than a hefty module affixed to your rooftop. By installing the solar roof, you don’t have to go through a solar panel installation process and have a solar panel system on your roof to generate electricity, which some property owners find visually unappealing. A home with Tesla solar roof tiles installed would have a protective and complete roof with the capacity to generate solar energy. The Tesla Solar Roof system is a building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) product that takes the functionality of solar panels and integrates it into roof shingles. The Tesla Solar Roof: what you need to know If you want to learn more, we compare traditional solar photovoltaic panels to solar shingles in this article. They are made from photovoltaic materials like silicon and are able to generate electricity while blending in with your roof. Solar shingles are essentially small solar panels that are designed to look and act like shingles made from traditional materials. ![]()
